CORRECTION: The previous posted data on the points for Dog of the Year in the champion class was calculated accidentally including the Monday of the Badger State Shed Dogs event in lieu of Saturday. This has been rectified and the correct DOY points are shown below. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused. A new format with new processes for calculation points comes with new challenges. We appreciate your patience and are happy to hear about the positive outlook on this aspect of the sport following the format changes. Feel free to reach out regarding any questions of points calculations or standings.
Judge of the Year Nominees
Judging is a huge commitment, donating your weekends to travel and judge dogs, walking countless steps over a weekend in support of this amazing sport. Judging even just once deserves acknowledgement, so thank you to all the people who took on judging assignments this quarter! There were three individuals who showed up in force equally this past quarter to judge your dogs with 8 assignments each. This quarter's nominees for Judge of the Year are:
- Zach Bianchin
- Kellie Curtis
- Darcy Greiger
Please join me in congratulating these three individuals for earning nominations for Judge of the Year, and be sure to thank them next time you see them for all their efforts!
Club of the Year Nominee
- Great Lakes Antler Dogs
Because of the unfair advantage DOY events have drawing larger numbers because of the nature of the event, clubs are omitted from nomination in the quarters of their DOY event, however I would like to still shine recognition on K9 Fanciers for drawing the largest average entry this quarter. Even though it was a dog of the Year event and doesnt earn them a nomination this quarter, it still takes just as much effort to host large events so I want to recognize them with an honorable mention this quarter.
Outside of DOY events, the club with the largest average event entry this quarter was Great Lakes Antler Dogs with their April hunt! Great Lakes is no stranger to Club of the Year nominations, and showed out once again! Hosting events is no small feat regardless of the turnout, so thank you to all 15 clubs who hosted events in the 1st quarter for providing an opportunity for our competitors to exhibit their dogs and hours of training at home.
Youth Handler of the Year Nominee:
- Emory Bianchin
This quarter's Youth of the Year nominee found themselves at the top of the podium handling Blue Clays' Deep Rooted Wild Oak. These two have made quite a team this quarter, and I would not be surprised if you continue to see them blazing the field at more weekend trials this year! Congratulations, Emory!
Ambassador of the Year Nominee
The ambassador of the year is a unique award because there is no metric used to calculate who was the most involved or helpful over the past three months. If somehow, we did quantify this award, we would have a tie between countless people every quarter. This sport is driven forward by the welcoming, respectful, and helpful nature of all the participants. Ambassadors and nominees, past, present, and future should hold themselves to a higher standard and be role models for new and existing members.
- Amy Kuchenbecker
It was a huge shock to me to find she had never been nominated prior to now. She could easily be considered of the founding first ladies of the UKC Elite Shed Dog Series. Many of you know firsthand how much she has done to help build the sport and this is most obviously exemplified by her work alongside some other amazing people with the Youth Scholarship Committee, which is committed to engaging with and rewarding the competitive youth in this sport. Amy, your peers acknowledge all your time and effort in this sport and congratulations on this long overdue nomination for Ambassador of the Year!
Dog of the Year Standings:
It has been a competitive field since the start of season 7. The new format has brought a new level of competition to the sport, and we are happy to see the turnout at many of the DOY events so far. We are happy to bring the standings from our first quarter. With the last news item outlining the DOY points calculations, were sure many of you have been keeping track of your dogs points so far, but we would like to post the current leaders in each dog class! Congratulations to the current top contenders! In Working and Champion class, some top dogs are beginning to emerge, however, in the non-retriever award class, it is still anyone's game! Since there have not been enough opportunities to qualify, no one has yet officially qualified for the awards, so make sure you keep in mind, regardless of points, you still need 8 qualifying runs in order to officially be in the running. Because of the qualification criteria, the leaderboard could look a lot different, so dont be discouraged if you're not in the top 10 now, because you may still have a chance to make your bid for the coveted title of "Dog of the Year!" Good luck competitors!

Guided by the belief that dogs make a difference by being the best partner a human can have in the field, on the job, or in a competition event, UKC is a community for people and dogs to pursue excellence together. Founded in 1898, UKC has been dedicated to enhancing the lives of Dogs That Do More, and their owners, by providing essential resources to help owners and breeders make informed decisions. The dog-human bond is celebrated through family-friendly programs highlighting the instincts and heritage of purebred and mixed-breed dogs alike at over 18,000 licensed events annually.
